THE WORLD’S BIGGEST ROLLER DERBY TOURNAMENT COMES TO ADELAIDE
The world’s biggest roller derby tournament The Great Southern Slam (TGSS), rolls into Adelaide from June 9 to 11, 2018 hosted by Adelaide Roller Derby at the Adelaide Showground.
Over three whole days, 48 roller derby teams from across Australia and New Zealand will converge in Adelaide, battling it out for a chance to be crowned TGSS champions. The three days of competition will see over 80 roller derby bouts take place across five tracks, all hosted within the Adelaide Showground Pavilions.
Some will come intent on glory, others to test their mettle, but all will come to revel in the biggest roller derby community celebration of hard-hitting knocks and derby love this nation has ever seen. 2018 will mark the fifth time this biennial tournament has been held by the Adelaide Roller Derby. This tournament will also be the biggest slam since it’s inception in 2010 and it will be the first time a third division of competition has been introduced to the tournament.
TGSS was birthed in 2009 from an idea to bring leagues across Australia and New Zealand together under one roof, offering the opportunity to compete against one another, a chance that many rural and/or remote leagues did not receive. The first TGSS was held in 2010 and has since become a biennial event that showcases the largest roller derby tournament in the world.
The big weekend culminates on Monday night with a world-class Division 1 Grand Final seeing the best of the best face each other for the number one spot. After the game the TGSS 2018 Hoedown After Party will be open to everyone who participates or holds an entry ticket, and will see derby veterans, rookies and fans kicking up dust and boot scooting on down into the wee hours of Monday night! Held onsite at TGSS, the after party will be held after the Division 1 Grand Final and will feature a special guest DJ and food trucks.
Roller derby doesn’t get any bigger than this, make sure you don’t miss it over the June long weekend.

About Roller Derby:
Roller Derby across the world is empowering women, building community and creating positive change. The game itself is a full contact sport played by two teams skating around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups ‘jams’, in which both teams designate a player, the ‘jammer’ who scores points by lapping opposing team members as they attempt to block the ‘jammer’.
