ZIPTRAK STAGE 1, BAROSSA CIRCUIT STARTS AND FINISHES IN TANUNDA.
THE PELOTON IS POISED, POSITIONED AND READY TO RACE + WHAT’S ON TODAY
The Santos Tour Down Under kicks off in the Barossa today as the first UCI WorldTour race of the 2020 season assembles on the start line, for Ziptrak Stage 1. Sunday night’s Schwalbe Classic sprint display in the city saw Lotto Soudal’s Caleb Ewan, take the win.
Today’s opening stage of the 2020 Santos Tour Down Under will see riders complete five laps of a 30-kilometre circuit which starts and finishes in Tanunda, and travels through nearby Bethany, Angaston, Penrice and Nuriootpa.
South Australian Premier Steven Marshall said huge crowds were expected to line the race route today.
“Spectators can not only enjoy some elite cycling action but can also experience everything the Barossa has to offer – from the region’s quality produce to world-class wineries only a stone’s throw away from the racing,” Mr Marshall said.
“The Barossa region is a popular destination for domestic and international travellers, helping to put South Australia on the map. It’s great to be able to have the cycling go straight through here so visitors can make the most of their time in this fantastic part of the state.”
Mike Turtur, Race Director, Santos Tour Down Under said he expects this year’s course will provide another close race and has been designed to cater for all riders, as well as spectators with circuits multiple laps through start or finish locations.
“The design of our race is a unique feature of the event and this year we have three days for both the sprinters and the all-rounders,” Mr Turtur said.
“We’re going back to Paracombe and will climb Willunga Hill again for the finale in Be Safe Be Seen Stage 6 but also have a fast race set for today in the Barossa and we’ll challenge the peloton with a return to Stirling.
“We recognise that circuit racing gives people the opportunity to see the race multiple times and really does allow the full colour of the race to be presented to spectators. The riders like them too because they can familiarise themselves with the circuit and the climbs, and it reduces the danger of corners because they do them multiple times.”
The 2020 Santos Tour Down Under is an 11-day festival running from 16 – 26 January 2020 with today being the first day of men’s racing with Ziptrak Stage 1.
