Santos Women’s Tour Down Under Starts Today
The 2019 Santos Tour Down Under officially starts today with 90 of the world’s best female riders, across 15 teams, taking to the start line for Ziptrak Stage 1 – departing Hahndorf and finishing in Birdwood.
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, David Ridgway said South Australia was ready for an exciting week of racing.
“We’re looking forward to another hugely successful Santos Women’s Tour, with large crowds anticipated to cheer on a high-profile list of riders,” said Minister Ridgway.
“Race-goers and cyclists love the mix of challenges the Adelaide Hills has to offer, with fans set to revisit the region when the peloton returns on Saturday for the Subaru Stage 3 start in Nairne.
“We urge everyone to not only come out and support the women’s peloton but to also come and enjoy the local community celebrations. There is a free breakfast in Hahndorf on offer and free entry to the Birdwood Motor Museum – a great family outing” said the Minister.
The 2019 Santos Women’s Tour Down Under peloton has a strong field of riders travelling from all corners of the globe to race with the 21 nations represented in the peloton.
Naturally, this includes a strong Australian contingent, joining riders from Belgium, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa, The Netherlands, Ukraine and the USA.
Kimberley Conte, Race Director, Santos Women’s Tour Down Under is looking forward to the actual racing starting today.
“Stage 1 starts in historic Hahndorf and will be one for the rolleurs – athletes who can climb as well as sprint. The longer distance and topography will favour riders who can conquer the unpredictable rhythm brought out by the undulating terrain.”
“The first stage of the season will be more of a chess match and we expect the competition to be fierce and intense,” said Kimberley Conte.
The 2019 Santos Tour Down Under will be held 10 – 20 January 2019, starting today with Ziptrak Stage 1 of the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under.
