he 2020 Santos Tour Down Under officially starts today with 94 of the world’s best female riders, across 16 teams, taking to the start line for Ziptrak Stage 1 – departing from Hahndorf and finishing in Macclesfield.
South Australian Premier Steven Marshall said the entire state was looking forward to the festival atmosphere and an exciting week of racing.
“South Australia is set for another hugely successful Santos Women’s Tour Down Under, with large crowds headed for the hills and the city to cheer on a high-profile list of riders,” Mr Marshall said.
“The Adelaide Hills will play host to three hotly contested stages of racing over the next three days before the penultimate stage is held in the CBD on Sunday.
“Race-goers, cyclists and festival fans are expected to flock to support the women’s peloton and kick-off the Tour. And this year, that support means even more as crowds are encouraged to enjoy the wider Adelaide Hills region and support our fire-affected communities.”
The 2020 Santos Women’s Tour Down Under peloton has a strong field of riders travelling from all corners of the globe to race, representing 21 nations.
Naturally, this includes strong Australian and New Zealand contingents, joining riders from Belgium, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland, Thailand, Ukraine and the USA.
Kimberley Conte, Race Director, Santos Women’s Tour Down Under said the event is ready for racing to get underway today.
“We’ve got a course that could be described as both animated and demanding but all three road stages could be won by any rider – someone who is willing to attack at the right moment to grab the win,” Ms Conte said.
“Ziptrak Stage 1 starts today in historic Hahndorf. It will be a quick race with three sprints through Echunga, a deviation from Meadows to Kuitpo and a final circuit of Macclesfield-Meadows-Echunga, finishing with a sprint through the town of Macclesfield.
“This stage has a European feel, a Milan–San Remo type of race that will keep audiences on the edge of their seat until the finish in Macclesfield. It’s the first time we’re holding a finish in Macclesfield so it’ll be a great day in the history of our race – and an exciting one for local residents.”
The 2020 Santos Tour Down Under will be held 16 – 26 January 2020, starting today with Ziptrak Stage 1 of the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under.
