Festival of Cycling update

By Tony Polese · On January 19, 2021

Spartacus returns to Adelaide (virtually),
for Chasing Cancellara

The Santos Festival of Cycling is thrilled to announce a Virtual Chasing Cancellara Time Trial on the FulGaz platform to take place on Thursday 21 January.

Fans from around the world can watch the world time trial and Olympic champion as he and some of the best past, present, and future cycling professionals take on participate in the ‘Chasing Cancellara” event race series, that ventures to Australia for the first time, albeit virtually.

Fans can also watch on live at an event put on by the SkyCity venue, The District, Adelaide, South Australia which will be streamed through Facebook live.

Fabian Cancellara is arguably one of the greatest cyclists of his generation, who prior to retiring in 2016 was a winner of 4 world time trial championships, 2 Olympic time trial Gold Medals, and countless cycling monuments.

Joining Cancellara will be some of the best past, present and future riders racing the champion through a demanding 18.4km FulGaz segment as they take on the popular Greenhill Road climb, before venturing through a punchy and scenic part of the Adelaide Hills.

“Whilst I never had a chance to race at the Santos Tour Down Under, I loved my time at TDU in January 2020 taking to the roads of Adelaide, and I’m eager to see the circuit that has been put together that climbs from the Adelaide suburbs into the hills”, says Cancellara.

”We are assembling some great names to take part, and we hope it will be an entertaining event to participate in, watch live or online around the world” he added.

A number of Fabian’s former team-mates are expected to join him, including Andy Schleck and Jens Voigt as they battle the up and coming pros of the future from the Swiss Racing Academy, and current stars of the peloton, including Esteban Chaves and Lucy Kennedy of Team Bike-Exchange, Rachel Neylan of Cronos-Casa Dorado, Lauren Stephens of Tibco Silicon Valley Bank and FulGaz Ambassador, Brodie Champman of FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope.

Chaves, a two-time grand tour podium finisher, and a monument winner said, “I last raced in Adelaide in 2017, and while I obviously can’t be there this year, I’m looking forward to taking on Fabian up a challenging Adelaide Hills climb”.
