GIDDEY STARS IN DOUBLE OVERTIME THRILLER
NBL Next Star Josh Giddey has quickly shown why he is considered one of Australia’s next NBA stars, with a stunning performance to help lead the Adelaide 36ers to their first win of the Hungry Jack’s NBL Season. Giddey recorded 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in front of 6,518 adoring Sixers fans at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, as the home side defeated the South East Melbourne Phoenix, 116-108, in double overtime. 18-year-old Giddey is already ranked 39th in ESPN’s 2021 NBA Draft rankings but could soon be ranked much higher after performances like this. With the game on the line, the teenager stepped up for the Sixers and even overcame a nasty fall after a dunk in overtime. He was brilliantly supported by captain Daniel Johnson who scored a game high 33 points on 11-of-14 shooting. The Phoenix fought bravely as they pegged back multiple leads to stay in the game but their poor three-point shooting (26 per cent) became too much to overcome. Mitch Creek starred for the visitors, notching 30 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Yanni Wetzell enjoyed a strong showing in his NBL debut with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
