Homeboy Header buried the Reds!
Season 2020 of the A league kicked off at Coopers stadium with a crowd of 9900 soccer starved fans attending to see a 5 goal roller coaster between reigning title holders Sydney FC and local team Adelaide United. The match started well and slowly with both teams who shared midfield and mild attacking passages of play, but it would be the VAR system that would strike and award Sydney a penalty and the first A-league goal of the season. The contentious penalty was hard for most fans in the stadium who booed the referee hard and the goal jittered the Reds for the remaining of the half as Le fondre would strike again 6 minutes after his penalty to put Sydney 2 up. On the dawn of half time Adelaide would strike back from a Melusnic free kick outside the box, simply aimed at the top right pocket and whipped past the keepers glove.
In the second half the reds would quickly level play when young recruit Toure would hold his composure in the box a flip it past the Sydney keeper. The game would turn on its heads 6minutes later when brain fade set in on United’s Strain arguably one of the Reds best on field at that point when he deliberately impeded Barbarouses on a potential goal scoring run. With 10 men for the remaining 35minutes the Reds young squad continued to attack and also be attacked, VAR denied Barbarouses a goal deeming him offside and local boy, MCGowan would head home a third in the 87th to give Sydney the win. If Sydney is the benchmark then this youthful and untried Adelaide United, may have season better than most expect once they gear up.
