2017 Tour Down Under kicks off this weekend

By Tony Polese · On January 13, 2017

A massive weekend of cycling action and entertainment awaits fans as top international riders prepare to race throughout South Australia – and it’s all FREE for you and your friends or family to enjoy!

The Santos Women’s Tour begins at 11am on Saturday (14 January), with Stage 1 to travel between Hahndorf and Meadows.

The event — which features 102 riders from 11 international and six domestic teams — also includes:

  • Stage 2 at 5:45pm on Sunday 15 January
Get ready for blistering sprints in this East End criterium, held ahead of the People’s Choice Classic.
  • Stage 3 at 11am on Monday 16 January
Riders will travel through Tanunda, Seppeltsfield, Greenock and Williamstown before finishing in Lyndoch.
  • Stage 4 at 6:30pm on Tuesday 17 January

All eyes will be on Victoria Park as the Santos Women’s Tour wraps up with a second circuit race.

The Adelaide City Council Tour Village in Victoria Square opens at 3pm this Saturday — be among the first in line for special giveaways! Entry is free and you’ll find a great range of exhibitors, food, drinks and entertainment, plus the chance to grab autographs and see riders up close. Click here for more.

Make sure you’re at the Adelaide City Council Tour Village from 6:30pm on Saturday to see all cyclists competing in the Santos Women’s Tour and Santos Tour Down Under introduced to the crowd. The Team Presentation — to be hosted by renowned commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen — will be followed by a free concert by ARIA-award-winning band Birds of Tokyo. It’s the perfect way to kick off Australia’s premier cycling race.

The People’s Choice Classic from 7:15pm on Sunday is sure to be hotly contested, with riders eager to test their legs and start the season well. Be there to see reigning road world champion Peter Sagan ride for the first time with his new team BORA-hansgrohe, and stay on for a free post-race concert featuring DJ Havana Brown!
Sunday’s fun also includes the first of two 2017 Santos Tour Down Under Family Days. It begins at 2:30pm in the parklands bordered by the People’s Choice Classic circuit, and features everything from free Bupa ice-blocks to face painting, mini golf, life-sized board games, rock climbing and crafts.

The 2017 Santos Women’s Tour will take place from 14-17 January, with the 2017 Santos Tour Down Under to be held from 14-22 January. Visit tourdownunder.com.au for all event news.
