The atmosphere was electric in Adelaide’s CBD on Thursday morning, as bloggers and media personalities gathered to celebrate the 40 year Ruby Anniversary of Rundle Mall.
The anniversary event was held in the heart of the mall with prominent guest speakers including the Lord Mayor Martin Haese, gathering to pay tribute to 40 years of the iconic shopping precinct.
Celebrations kicked off with Bird in Hand wine, stunning canapés and short speeches from various Rundle Mall figures, including retailers who have worked in Rundle Mall since the beginning; the granddaughter of the artist who sculpted ‘The Spheres’ – or as most of us refer to it, the ‘Malls Balls’; and of course, the Lord Mayor.
Laughter filled the beautifully decorated space as a reenactment was attempted of the original opening, where the iconic Rundle Mall fountain was filled with champagne in 1976. This time however, it was poured into a tower of coupe glasses, just to be safe!
Since the original opening, Australia’s oldest pedestrian mall has undergone a variety of makeovers, including the recent $30 million redevelopment and the future Gawler Place redevelopment estimated to cost $7.85 million.
The event finished with a bang – literally – as rich explosions of ruby-red rose petals and gold confetti was shot across the mall, a spectacular finale to a magical morning.
From the team at Eventalaide, thank you Rundle Mall for including us on your special day, and congratulations on your ruby anniversary!
