Fringe Review: Magic @ Hotel Richmond

By Tony Polese · On February 25, 2020

What: The Extraordinary Guests of Hotel Richmond
Where: Hotel Richmond (Rundle Mall)
Duration: 75 minutes
When: now through to March 15
Genre: Magic / Close-Up

Imagine getting up close and personal with a Magician in an intimate setting and having an opportunity to catch that sleight of hand trick.  Welcome to the Extraordinary Guests of the Richmond Hotel, except it’s not just one intimate setting but four rooms each with its own highly skilled magic artist.

Each mini performance is about 20 minutes as the audience then rotates into the next adventure room.  This immersive experience is such a great concept with lots of audience participation and banter.  Be prepared for reverse heckling [where the artist is picking on the punters] but in a good natured way.

On our night we had Erica Vanlee, an American magician, actress and model who has appeared in shows such as Masters of Illusion who provided a burlesque twist with parasols and linking rings.  Liam Power demonstrated his mastery of the card trick and then took it contemporary with manipulating technology. Whilst Simon Coronel turned five dollar notes into fifty!  Now that is a skill I would love to have! My favourite was PiP Comic Illusionist and finalist on Australia’s Got Talent,  who commanded the first room with the classic illusion of sawing his beautiful assistant in half on an old surgical barouche.
There are seven magicians on schedule who are rotated on a regular basis so you can almost be guaranteed to get a different show later in the season.

I enjoyed it so much I plan to go again and see what other vignettes I can experience and see if I can do a Penn and Teller and work out how they do it.
