Australia’s most revered and iconic Yolngu rock band Yothu Yindi is set to take the stage at Hindley Street Music Hall as part of Illuminate Adelaide, to celebrate their 30th anniversary.
With original band members and fresh talent from the next generation, this revamped supergroup of blackfellas and whitefellas from far North East Arnhem Land continue to honour the music and movement its founders sparked in 1986, and live up to the spirit of intergenerational kinship of the band’s name (Yolŋu Matha for ‘child and mother’).
Yothu Yindi made 1990s Australia sit up and listen as the band became a proving ground for some of the country’s most celebrated artists from Gurrumul to King Stingray.
In this special NAIDOC week celebration, the ARIA Hall of Fame inductees will inject new fire into classic songs, from their timeless anthem ‘Treaty’ to the inspiring ‘Tribal Voice’ and will be a unique opportunity to celebrate the legacy of one of Australia’s most revered musical acts and experience their powerful message first hand.
Highly celebrated, ARIA-nominated, award-winning Indigenous singer and songwriter Emma Donovan will support Yothu Yindi for this one night only concert.
Emma has been touring the country for over 20 years, performing soulful songs and sharing powerful stories with audiences around the globe. She first appeared on the stage with her renowned family band The Donovans, performing church song renditions with her mother Agnes, her five uncles and maternal grandparents Micko and Aileen.
Emma is now best known for her work with greatly admired Melbourne rhythm combo The Putbacks and the extraordinary Black Arm Band project. Emma has toured and recorded with the best in the Australian music scene including Paul Kelly, The Teskey Brothers, Yothu Yindi, Paul Grabowsky, Jen Cloher, Spinifex Gum and the late Uncle Archie Roach and Aunty Ruby Hunter.
