WOMADELAIDE HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES IN 2019

By Tony Polese · On March 13, 2019

Over 90,000 local, interstate and international guests were treated to a global feast for the senses, as they danced, talked and sang their way through four idyllic days at WOMADelaide from March 8 – 11.

Setting the tone for the event, Christine and The Queens had audiences in the palm of her hand as the French pop-powerhouse amazed Friday night crowds. Flamenco pioneer,

María Pagés’ radical interpretation of, Yo Carmen was touted as unmissable; and keeping people dancing across the site, Artonik’s The Colour Of Time, inspired young and old in their reinterpretation of the traditional Holi celebration, bursting colorfully across the park.

Angelique Kidjo stole the show on Sunday night as thousands reveled to her reimagined rendition of the Talking Head’s classic album, Remain in Light, entwined with many of her own hits spanning a career of over 25 years. Soweto’s BCUC performed with the extraordinary power of a revivalist congregation – singing of hope and power of individual freedom powered by thumping afro-punk beat, the likes WOMADelaide audiences have never seen.

WOMADelaide Director Ian Scobie said fantastic weather, amazing audiences, and incredible artists were at the heart of WOMADelaide 2019’s triumphant success.

“The weekend has been a tremendous celebration of the worlds most extraordinary music, arts, and dance across the festival site in a way that this festival city is able to stage so well.” said Mr Scobie.

“This year’s line-up encapsulated the extraordinary diversity of the international arts and music community from every corner of the globe. From the world renowned Original Gypsies closing the festival on Monday night, to the eclectic collaboration of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad Ensemble, the arresting and thought provoking conversations started from WOMADelaide Planet Talks program, and the delightful discovery of The Leafies, from France’s Le Phun who have become so enamoured with the City of music they plan to explore Adelaide in the coming days.”

WOMADelaide 2020 will be celebrated from the 6 – 9 March, Botanic Park, Adelaide, South Australia.
