On Friday 5 July, the Australian String Quartet performed their first national program for 2024: Vanguard. Since 1985, the Australian String Quartet has presented virtuoso performances of compositions throughout history in beautifully curated programs. One of the special things about the Australian String Quartet is the crowd their performances draw. With such interesting and accessible programs you know you are guaranteed an enjoyable performance.
Vanguard is no exception. Selecting composers who were considered at the forefront of their fields, the juxtaposition between works over time provides a joyfull collection of music that celerates those who push boundaries to create new art.
The concert opens with Beethoven’s heroic String Quartet No.12 in E-flat Major, Op.127. The performance of this late Beethoven masterpiece captures its complexity, from the assertive opening chord to the introspective melodies and dynamic rhythms that follow. Their performance brings out the quartet’s emotional depth and technical brilliance, highlighting Beethoven’s groundbreaking compositional style.
Following Beethoven, the program features the national premiere of Harry Sdraulig’s String Quartet No.2. The execution of this piece is a testament to their versatility and contemporary relevance. The piece’s energetic scherzo and tender, expansive finale, leaves a lasting impression.
The concert concludes with Korngold’s String Quartet No.2 in E-flat Major, Op.26.
