TRAPT: The Gov Wednesday 5 July 2017
Review Geoff Jenke
American rockers TRAPT hit Australian soil for the first time in their long career. They formed way back in California in 1995. Their first independent release, Amalgamation, was released in 1999 and since then they have released six albums, the latest, DNA was set upon the world last year. They have toured the world with some of rocks biggest names, Motley Crue, Nickelback and Halestorm to name a few. Now it was Australia’s turn.
The band opened with Still Frames from debut 2002 self titled album. Singer Chris Taylor Brown immediately getting the small but obviously enthusiastic audience to “party like it is a Friday night. Forget about tomorrow”. And party they did, not letting up for the 14 song main set.
Songs came from their entire career, with four actually coming from their debut album. The crowd obviously were dedicated fans, singing along to TRAPT classics like Who’s Driving You Home Tonight, Echo’s, These Walls and the “big hit” Headstrong.
Naturally they were here to support their latest album DNA and played a couple of great tracks off it. The crowd went off to the new songs Human and Passenger before going completely mental to Stand Up, a bona fide classic rock anthem.
The band had two newish members in tow, David Sudock on lead guitar and Brendan Hengle on drums, both gelling with original members Peter Charell on bass and Chris Taylor Brown on vocals. During the performance Chris also donned a guitar, adding a new depth to the sound.
After the full on main set, I was surprised by the encore. It was just Chris Taylor Brown with an acoustic guitar doing the song Stories. I think the crowd expected the band to come out after this to finish the night, but no, that was it. Still it was a great way to sooth the savage beast that was the crowd.
The band also came out after to mingle and talk with its fans. A nice touch.
I must admit not knowing a lot about TRAPT before going to this show, but will now be checking out their body of work.
