Lead by vocalists Ahren Stringer and Joel Birch, The Amity Affliction came through, as always, on Saturday night with an epic concert at Thebarton Theatre that attracted thousands.
Supported by Perth’s Make Them Suffer, and U.S. bands PVRIS and Beartooth, the crowd was well and truly warmed up before TAA tore up the stage for a second time since the release of their Aria award-winning album This Could Be Heartbreak in 2016.
The set list was a mix of crowd favourites from the bands most successful albums including This Could Be Heartbreak (2016), Let the Ocean Take Me (2014), Chasing Ghosts (2012) and Youngbloods (2010).
Majority of the set consisted of the bands latest works, including the single Shine On and top tracks from the latest two albums such as I Bring the Weather With Me, Pittsburgh, Don’t Lean On Me, and The Weigh Down.
While this old-school fan would have loved to hear even thirty seconds of Anchors or H.M.A.S Lookback, I’m pleased to report that The Amity Affliction still blessed our ears with a few of the older hits such as I hate Hartley, and of course, Youngbloods. More importantly, it appears that TAA have started giving longer performances than they used to, a feat in its own for metal vocalists that train their voices to last longer.
Known for their themes of friendship and the power that it has to pull people out of dark places, it was obvious on Saturday night that The Amity Affliction brings people together. Friends moshed hard together, draped their arms around each other while belting out the lyrics, and a few even got overwhelmed and were brought to tears.
Any Metalcore fans who missed the show will be sad to hear that this concert brought out some of Amity’s largest circle pits at Thebby Theatre to date, and even saw a fairly brutal wall-of-death during the heavy classic Death’s Hand.
The pyrotechnics from this concert deserve a mention in their own right, as TAA gave the crowd an incredible display of flames, which they haven’t always included in previous years. The amount of care that seems to have been taken when designing the extras like lighting display, confetti and fire for this years tour were not underappreciated by the crowd that went wild with every extra little touch.
The Amity Affliction never disappoints and this concert was no exception, their commitment to delivering an outstanding performance shone through on Saturday night and for this I will be rating this concert a 10/10.
