Splendour in the Grass 2019 | Lineup Announce Date + Artist in Residence

By Tony Polese · On March 28, 2019

Secret Sounds Presents the 19th Annual Music & Arts Festival
SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2019
LINEUP DROPS NEXT WEEK
INTRODUCING SPLENDOUR’S 2019 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE – LEE McCONNELL

Y’all ready for this?

Splendour in the Grass is gearing up to drop a lineup that’s more cracking than an egg to the head! Get ready to set your alarm clocks for 8am AEDT on Wednesday 3 April and tune into triple j to hear who’ll be making the pilgrimage across the country and around the globe to beautiful Byron Bay for the 19th edition of Splendour in the Grass!

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Splendour in the Grass is thrilled to welcome ARIA nominated visual artist Lee McConnell as their Artist in Residence of 2019. Lee’s #collab with Splendour will see him create the event’s 2019 artwork and bring it to life, working his magic on some amazing installations across the festival site.

Too cool for art school? Lee will also be running a Masterclass at the festival! An intimate gathering for aspiring artists, a select handful of lucky Splendour ticketholders will have direct access to Lee and can get the low down on how he got to where he is today. Stay tuned on how to apply!

Whether you’ve got a Dune Rats record on repeat, you’re a lover of Jack River, or you’ve scored some Mambo threads, there’s no doubt you’ve travelled through the vivid and distinctly Australian flavored worlds created by Lee in his artworks.
Splendour Artist in Residence Lee McConnell talks to Secret Sounds Creative Director Jeremy Hancock.
From flipping woks in his small seaside town of Forster, Lee moved to Sydney to work for Mambo as an artist and then as Art Director, before going out on his own to create magic for a bunch of Australian artists and festivals.

His aesthetic has become widely recognisable, notably through his long term collaboration with Dune Rats where he directs their artistic media, from music videos (6 Pack), stage installations and animations, to the album packages themselves. Ever moshed with a giant beer can at a Dunies gig? You’ve got Lee to thank for that.

In visual worlds apart, he’s also designed all of Jack River’s single and album packages, including her recent collaboration with Peking Duk – ‘Sugar’. Lee also holds the title of Creative Director for Jack River’s festival, Grow Your Own.

Lee takes inspiration from the strangeness of everyday reality – making it brighter, stranger, and like you’ve never seen it before. Dive into his world at Splendour in the Grass!

Remember to tune into triple j Breakfast and www.splendourinthegrass.com at 8am on Wednesday 3 April to find out who is on Splendour’s team of 2019!
