SODYPOP – Angry Anderson, Peter Combe & The Borderers +many more
The Gov 14 June 2017
Review by Geoff Jenke
The SodyPop show was a fundraiser for Rosie’s Cancer treatment. With chemo, major surgery and various alternative treatments failing to work, Rosie is trying a new generation treatment called Immunotherapy Pembrolizumab. Unfortunately this treatment is not cheap, hence the fundraiser concert.
The line-up featured the cream of South Australian talent and enticed Angry Anderson to compere the evening.
Resident band, The Sodypop All Stars played most of the night backing various artists. The evening started with the band playing some great classic rock’n’roll with Susie Farrugia on vocals. The short set ended with a soulful version of Steve Miller’s Fly Like A Eagle. This then was the format for the evening, with a quick change over and each artist getting 3 to 4 songs.
Next up were the folk duo Andy & Marta who gave us a superb version of the Beach Boys God only Knows. Then time for a bit of comedy with the Krusty Cowboy Klub who played a reworked version of Ghost Riders in the Sky Ghost and called it Ghost Chickens in the Sky. Then they converted the Village People’s YMCA to a song called CWA. They finished their set with a brilliant The Devil came Down To Orstraya complete with a wobble board duel instead of fiddles. Hilarious.
Snooks La Vie & Nico held the audience captive with their guitar and harmonica blues and then Joe Braithwaite, with his fantastic voice played a brilliant short solo set.
South Australian icon, Don Morrison gave us a few of his classic songs which included Back Home in Adelaide and the wonderful Pat Malone. This was the highlight of the evening till now. The Borderers presented their high energy arousing set supported by The Sodypop All Star Band. The Borderers always deliver but probably more so tonight with a sax player in the band.
Peter Coombe started his set with a rocking Newspaper Mama before giving us a great version of George Harrison’s Here Comes The Sun proving he is a all round entertainer.
With the Rob Riley Band on the bill, there was never any doubt that Angry Anderson would be on vocals. We got an extended set from the boys, who turned up the volume to 12, bypassing 11 altogether. Tattoo songs reigned. One of the Boys, Bad Boy For Love, Rock n Roll Outlaw, We Can’t Be Beaten were amongst the classics played. Angry’s voice is sounding as good as ever. They finished with a blistering cover of AC/DC’s Dog Eat Dog and after the raffle draw, ended the show with Highway to Hell. Rob Riley had a huge smile on his face during the entire performance.
An incredible nights entertainment from Adelaide’s finest, all of whom donated their time and talent. Nearly 4 hours of great music.
While we all had a great time, we have to remember why we were there. If you wish to help Rosie out with a donation, please go to https://au.gofundme.com/Rosecancertreatment and make a donation.
We wish Rosie all the best for the future and look forward to seeing her again next year and the next Sodypop show.
