Sleepmakeswaves @ The Gov

By Tony Polese · On August 23, 2016

Words by Fatema Sitabkhan

Hailing from Sydney, Australia is the instrumental rock band sleepmakeswaves, who performed at the Gov last Friday (August 5th, 2016) and it was another one of those nights that will be a truly incredible memory!

The band has been going strong since 2006, where they have released a number of albums that have seen a decent amount of success with each release. The music composed by sleepmakeswaves combines dynamic tunes that bring out the passion in their music through delicate undertones. Band members have been and gone, but they have created a consistent trend through their musical sense, where they can be heard on airplay on channels such as triple j, Radio K, and the BBC.

sleepmakeswaves literally made waves, starting in 2011, when their debut album “…and so we destroyed everything” led them to tour around Australia, Europe, USA and even got them a nomination for an ARIA Award. These guys have been soaring ever since and were given the momentous opportunity to tour alongside Karnivool & Dead Letter Circus in 2014.

Being an instrumental quartet in this day and age may not seem like a common occurrence, but that’s what makes them stand out and shine through their musical influence in the industry! The band has been through changes (in terms of musical styles and band members), but current members Otto Wicks (guitar), Alex Wilson (bass, electronics), Tim Adderley (drums), and Jonathan Khor (guitar) are determined to only deliver the best of the best records thus far. When one hears “instrumental”, they may not think much of it. However, the music by sleepmakeswaves is full of energy and provides their audience with an electric performance, while still staying true to their classic style of incorporating experimental sound into their work.

It is apparent from the way the guys present themselves on stage that they are all about “captivating” the audience and putting in “[heaps of] effort into their shows”, as fellow fans Matt and Irene pointed out after the gig. Throughout the concert, the audience was well tuned into sleepmakeswaves and the crowd was going absolutely insane! They paid for a concert and left with more than just the experience! That’s what makes sleepmakeswaves an amazing band to watch live.

The band even gave into our demands to come back and give us more, so we were treated to an unplanned encore that will forever be cherished in our memories! As Matt so eloquently put it, “as a band that has no singer, their stage presence and energy is never lacking and they pull you in”.
