After having to postpone their 2020 tour of Adelaide due to a certain pandemic, it was a two year wait for the capacity crowd that was in attendance on this Thursday night.
But when the curtains opened and the opening song was belted out with three words, “Divorced, Beheaded, Live!”, it was truly worth the wait.
Six which is an eight time Tony Award nominated production, tells the story of the six wives of Henry VIII. Remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak, these spirited queens retell their story their way in a high-energy 75 minute global musical phenomenon!
Since its humble beginnings as a student production in a 100-seat room at Sweet Venue during the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, its has grown to a production performing to over 70,000 people in the longest running production in Sydney Opera House Studio history, and taking Broadway and the West End by storm. It’s now time for the six queens to bring their high octane energy and sass to Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide.
Six opens with a high energetic belter called Ex-Wives with a flood of lighting across the theatre. The lighting is stunning throughout the production. A fantastic opening to get the audience energised for the next seventy minutes ahead.
We are then introduced to each of the queens pitting against each other to get the audience vote. So with that impending decision on the back of my mind, each of the queens perform their songs.
What I quickly realise is the amazing strong vocal each performer has.
A couple of witty and high energy songs are performed, before the energy levels are brought down with a stunning ballad called Heart of Stone. A personal favourite of mine.
Next song up is House of Holbein which has a lively Eurovision feel to it.
Before we finish with our last queen performing her song (Catherine Parr), there is a final twist to this tale of six queens.
A lot is packed into the seventy five minutes which left us uplifted walking out of the theatre.
Each song throughout the production is amazing and is no surprise that there has been 50 million streams across all platforms, and over 3 billion views on TikTok. And we can guarantee that you will be up dancing by the end of this show. Fantastic dance choreography throughout the production certainly had me impressed.
Five stars from us for these brilliant six queens.
SIX is playing in Adelaide only until June 12. This means no Queens birthday public holiday for these six queens in Adelaide. You do not want to miss this energetic pop musical packed with pure fun and entertainment!
