Ali Barter came to Jive in Adelaide for her “Hello, I’m doing my best” tour and she was absolutely incredible!
Playing songs from her new album (with the same name as the tour) and previous ones, Ali was incredibly down-to-earth and rocked the house with her 90s grunge rock persona. Watching her made me feel like was living the movie ’10 Things I Hate About You’ in real life!
She has such a sweet, innocent babyish voice, and then quickly slips into strong pop rock and it can almost take you by surprise, but it matches the style of the lyrics of her music so well, as she sings about love and happiness and then loss and sadness. Some of my personal favourite songs are from her album, “A Suitable Girl”, such as Cigarette, One Foot In, Girlie Bits and Please Stay. Her new album is not quite as catchy with the same hooks and choruses that made her famous, but it’s a lot more vulnerable and I feel it’s a more personal album, as it reflects her struggles and feelings in more recent times. With songs such as History Of Boys and her acoustically sung January.
This was really one of the most wholesome gigs I have been to, with a well-behaved crowd and lots of smiles and dancing.
If you like Ali Barter’s music but haven’t seen her yet then definitely do so when you get the chance because she sings even better in person! And to top it off, she looks incredible too; a 90’s dream!
