Oktoberfest in the Gardens 2016

By Kathryn Roberston · On October 19, 2016

Welcome to Oktoberfest in the Gardens 2016

Beer, fun and entertainment; what more could you want? Last weekend, I merrily made my way down to the Adelaide Showgrounds to check out SA’s very first Oktoberfest in the Gardens 2016.

The Showgrounds was transformed into a Germanic wonderland with plenty to do and see, but more on this later.  In its sixth year running, Adelaide joined already established events in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Oktoberfest in the Gardens is Australia’s largest and best Oktoberfest celebration. With perfect balmy festival weather on our side, I knew I was in for a good day.

When I first arrived around 3pm, it was a little quieter than I expected, but I loved this, as I could casually walk around and take in the sights. One added benefit of the turnout being slightly smaller being, not having to line up long for food; beer or toilet facilities, which is always a good thing.

It was great seeing so many of the punters getting into the spirit and dressing up in traditional German attire, which looked like a lot of fun.

As the day progressed into night, the numbers definitely grew. A big crowd favourite was the huge beer hall in the Jubilee Pavilion; I swear hundreds, even a couple of thousand had to be hanging out here.  People sat for hours drinking beer from their steins, of which everyone received on arrival as well as a free drink.  I think it’s safe to say, this sent everyone on their way nicely.  The atmosphere was chilled, but upbeat, as people enjoyed great beer, food and company.

There was plenty to see entertainment wise too; I loved the traditional German Oom-Pah bands, which added to the authenticity, feel and vibe of the day.  Silent Disco was heaps of fun too, and a big hit with the punters; as they sang and danced the night away.

We were spoilt for choice in regards to food; I couldn’t help myself….I had to try one of the metre long kransky hot dogs and the beer.  It was just perfect.

There were plenty of amusement rides and sideshows to keep the younger crowds entertained.

By now it was late, and after one too many beers, and way too much to eat. It was time to head home! Oktoberfest 2016 you were awesome. I can’t wait to do it all over again next year.
