Amy Shark Thebarton Theatre 24th May 2019
Amy Shark sure does love Adelaide! Its her third time to our fair city in the past few months. So, when she kept yelling out “Adelaide I love you!” I’m sure it was more than just concert banter. The night started with the first support act Erthlings showcasing their brand of mellow tones of indie rock. This four-piece band played songs like Dawn, Cuts and Bruises and Bridges.
Next were the high energy Slowly Slowly. Nothing slow about this band. They killed it with their brand of pop punk rock. At one point lead singer Ben Stewart told the audience “It’s hard to get your breath back after jumping around for 3 minutes straight.” Ben, I think you were jumping around for 30 minutes straight you champion! Great set starting with their song Dinosaurs and leaving the smash Jellyfish for last.
Amy Shark come on after a long wait between acts around 10:00pm but the crowd weren’t disappointed. They screamed and yelled in delight when she took the stage to tell us “Well hello Adelaide! How is everyone?” I think she was killing time due to technical difficulties but the crowd didn’t mind. We all came to see Shark and they were happy to here her talk, sing and everything in between.
She started the set with Blood Brothers, I Got You, Psycho and Don’t Turn Around. She told us she was here for our entertainment and she sure was. How good is Amy Shark? Yeah bloody good! Her talent and stage presence is full of pure energy! Commanding the stage on her own while the band were behind the large letters spelling AMY SHARK. She was all we wanted or needed.
Continuing with her current smash Mess Her Up followed by The Idiot, Weekends then giving us an emotional acoustic version of Spits on Girls and Leave Us Alone until near the end of that song where the band came back with an almighty thumping and we got back to rocking it out.
In between songs she gave us plenty of banter especially telling us her adventures of her European tour where a fan wanted to “make a picture” and that “she wasn’t her favourite Australian artist.” Gotta love those honest Europeans!
Nearing the end of the show we heard more of the big hits like Drive You Mad, Never Coming Back and the Wheatus cover Teenage Dirtbag where you could hardly hear Shark as the crowd went off and LOUD! Another cover followed, this time it was the Maroon Girls Like You which also got a good reaction. What ever song Shark sings she makes it her own. Finishing on the song before the encore All Loved Up but she did tell us that this was the last song and that when she leaves the stage after that song, we had to chant her name and scream really loud for her to come back. I love it when an artist doesn’t take themselves so seriously. Of course, we obliged and we chanted and chanted and nearly blew the roof off Thebby Theatre. She couldn’t go anywhere until she sang her two biggest hits so far, Adore and I Said Hi.
Shark ended by saying “Adelaide! This was the best show on the tour.” The way she loves Adelaide we never had a doubt it was going to be anything but the best!
