Montaigne delivers at Fat Controller
Every now and then an artist appears who creates a certain hype and hysteria with critics and fans alike, and Montaigne aka (Jessica Cerro) is one such rare talent. With the recent success of her EP “The Life of Montaigne”, and previous Triple J supported singles ‘Clip My Wings’ and ‘In The Dark’; I eagerly headed to Fat Controller the other week to see if she could live up to the hype.
The Sydney based muso was in Adelaide as part of her nationwide “Because I Love You Tour”, a tour that has sold out I might add.
Anyone who knows me knows I love my electronic dance sounds; bands or singers are generally not my thing. But wow… this girl’s performance blew me away! At the tender age of just 21, Montaigne has a presence and maturity of a musician well beyond her years.
Starting things off with her massive hit ‘I’m a Fantastic Wreck’, she had my attention from the very first stunning vocal. She followed that up with the fun and quirky ‘Greater Than me’, which the crowd loved, singing and clapping along.
A stand out moment for me was the Interlude track ‘Come Back To Me’. This was a truly beautiful and deep piece of music, and demonstrated the true depth of her as an artist. By this stage I was totally in a spell. So much so that I got goose bumps in fact! This girl is good!
Other tracks I loved on the night were, ‘What you Mean to Me’ and ‘Because I love you’, both also happening to be massive crowd favourites.
A night is not complete without an Encore; one which she thoroughly deserved. She did so perfectly closing things off with the hits ‘I Am Not An End’, ‘Clip My Wings’ and ‘Life’.
Montaigne is a little dynamo, who well and truly won my heart with her exciting and eclectic take on the Indie Pop genre. As an artists, she is definitely one to watch.
