Album Review – LISA MITCHELL – When They Play That Song (Parlophone)
Review by Geoff Jenke
Lisa Mitchell rose to prominence through Australian Idol, finishing sixth in 2006. Her debut album Wonder (2009) peaked at No. 6 on the ARIA charts. With her last album release being 2016, Lisa has recorded five of her favourite songs and recorded them with just acoustic guitars.
I was surprised when I saw the first track was Dave Edmunds rockabilly hit Cruel to be Kind. Lisa has stripped the song back to simple guitar, a long way removed from the rockin’ original. With her angelic voice over the guitar the track somehow works.
And so it is with the other four songs on the E.P. The theme to the TV show The O.C., California, originally by The Phantom Planet has been turned lofi. The Spice Girls song, Stop is a far cry from the original as Lisa successfully puts her own stamp on the song.
Placebo’s Every You, Every Me has never sounded so beautiful. The Cardigans Lovefool is a nice closer to the E.P.
While I am not a fan of cover albums, I must admit this one would make the almost perfect Sunday morning listening music album. A treat.
