(Interviewer: Geoff Jenke)
Interrogation 21 will hopefully be a regular feature on Eventalaide, highlighting artists from across Australia and occasionally overseas. Why 21? Well, it is the year 2021 and next year in 2022 I will add another question if it is still going. It is just meant to be a bit of fun so please treat it as such. Every artist will get the same questions.
Rhys, from Adelaide band The Trafalgars, volunteered to be the first to give it ago. The Trafalgars formed in 2002 and have supported some great bands over the last few years, Even and Icecream Hands to name a few. Influences include You Am I, The Small Faces, The Kinks and Supergrass. The sounds of the 60’s and 90’s Brit Pop can be heard in their songs. They will hopefully have an album out later this year. Having heard a few tracks from it, I can’t wait to hear the whole album and see the band promote it. Stay tuned.
Name: Rhys Bowkett
Alias: None that I’m aware of (probably a few that I’m not..).
Band The Trafalgars
In less than 50 words describe your music, your band and yourself.
Music: vintage tinged rock and/or roll, hopefully with enough melody in there too.
My band: 3 (or occasionally 4) great mates who probably don’t practice often enough.
Me: I might let others decide (yikes!).

Let the Interrogation begin
What was the first record you bought with your own money and where from? Either Love Shack by the B52s or Roy Orbison’s You got it on 7” vinyl when I was about 7… I’m still comfortable with both of those purchases.
60’s or 70’s Music: You’ve spelt ‘and’ wrong there Geoff.
What are you currently watching on TV? YouTube clips of Paul Keating successfully tearing the Libs a new one at every given opportunity.
The Best live artist/band show you’ve seen: Hmm, that’s a toughie. Neil Finn on his 1998 Try Whistling This tour was special. The Who in 2009 at the Grand Prix supported by Dallas Crane was an amazing spectacle. Seeing Brian May and the red special for the first time. Norman Blake and Joe Pernice at the Grace a few years back were sublime.
Your “In the mood for love” song; Hmm, are talking love or luuurve (sorry)? Spread your Love by BRMC has got some vibes…
Your favourite Saturday night party record? Any Dallas Crane, Junk or Plans by You Am I, Sloan’s Money City Maniacs is always a winner too.
Your favourite Sunday morning chill out record? I don’t think I’m ever chilled out unfortunately. My lovely wife would attest.
Which song do you wish you had written? Distant Sun or In My Command by Crowded House. Shangri La by The Kinks. Shark Fin Blues by The Drones or Winter by Teenage Fanclub.
Roger Daltry once said “Rock N Roll has no future”. Do you agree with him? Sorry Rog, you’re way off there, mate. At my place at least.
Vinyl, CD or Streaming? All have their place.
If you could record or play live with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be? Well, I’ve had the great pleasure of playing guitar with some of my heroes, Even, on a number of occasions.
What is the most useless talent you have? Being invisible when drink ordering at the bar.
Your finest recorded moment? A few tracks from our album hopefully due out within the next 12 months.
If you could open a show for any artist/band, who would it be? Well, we’ve been lucky enough to do that for a few of our favourite bands (Even, Dallas Crane, Icecream Hands) but if I had to pick one other, I’d have to say You Am I.
Stuck on a desert island for a year and can only take three albums. What would they be? Even’s Come Again, Teenage Fanclub’s Grand Prix, Crowded House’s Together Alone.
Favourite all time movie; 2001 Space Odyssey
Who would you rather be for a day, Mick Jagger or Keith Richard? Keef every day of the week.
Best show you have ever played in your career; Touring the east coast about 15 years ago we played a show in Canberra on St Patricks day. Everything worked perfectly that night.
Paul McCartney or Neil Young? Ouch! Oh, man I love Neil but I think I’d have to go Paul by a whisker.
Who is the nicest person in Rock n Roll at the moment? Ash Naylor
What do you hope the next 12 months holds for you? Finally releasing our Trafalgars album would be nice, then recording the next one!
