Questions by Geoff Jenke
Armed with infectious hooks and weighty subject matter, Eskimo Joe front man Kav Temperley has given fans the latest taste of his forthcoming studio album, sharing new single Last Of The Wine from his new highly anticipated sophomore record, Machines Of Love And Grace which is out now. Following on from previous 2022 singles Graduation Day and the record’s title track, Temperley’s latest release is a testament to his power as a songwriter; leaning into difficult and emotional territory, yet managing to navigate its complexities with both care, courage, and inimitable musical dexterity.

Name: Kav Temperley
What
was the first record you bought with your own money and where from?
It was either FAITH NO MORE album, The Real Thing on cassette or
Beck’s Mellow Gold on CD, either way it was Beck that would go on to have the
longest lasting effect on me. I would go to sleep each night listening to this
album. I loved the abstract storytelling and the approach of the acoustic
guitar set to Hip Hop beats, it all felt like a fruitful playground that I was
ready to explore.
Unfortunately, it was the time of the “secret track” and just as
I would drift off to sleep each night during the final track Black Hole, the
real final track would kick in, a track called Analogue Odyssey which was just a
bunch of unlistenable noise and I’d have to jump out of bed and press stop.
80’s
or 90’s Music?
Well, Doolittle by The Pixies came out in 1989 and Nirvana’s Never
Mind came out in 1991 so that a close one, but the 90’s certainly had more of
influence on me musically
What
music are currently listening to?
I’m loving YOKON (INTERLUDE) by Joji
Hold on to Something by Chris Staples
Talk Down by Dijon
The
Best live artist/band you’ve seen:
I was lucky enough to see Jeff Buckley twice when he toured his
album Grace, once at the Enmore in Sydney and once at the Belvoir Amphitheatre
in Perth both stunning and very different shows.
Your
“In the mood for love” song:
If were talking about f#%king albums, then a good place to start
is “The Dandy Warhols Come Down”.
Your
favourite Saturday night party record?
Toots and the Maytells is always fun.
Your
favourite Sunday morning chill out record?
Nick Drake’s Bryter Layer
Which
song do you wish you had written?
A Day in the Life by The Beatles
Roger
Daltry once said “Rock N Roll has no future”. Do you agree with him?
As soon as something becomes institutionalized it gets pretty
stiff and boring, rock n roll is not far behind jazz and classical with that
one.
I recently got up onstage with A.B.Original to sing their song,
Jan 26, and it was the most Rock n roll experience I’ve had in while.
I’m thinking about doing a hip hop album now
Vinyl,
CD or Streaming?
100% Vinyl
If
you could record or play live with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?
I would love to do an album with Danger Mouse, all his records
sound amazing
What
is the most useless talent you have?
All talents are useful
Your finest recorded moment?
I’m really proud of my vocals on the song “Machines of Love & Grace” from the new album. Every once in while you have an out of body experience when you step in front of the microphone and that was one of them.
Who
is your musical hero and what one question would you ask them?
I love Beck as I mentioned before, and I would love to ask him
what is his creative approach to getting an idea started. What’s his jump off
point
Dying,
peacefully on your death bed, what song would you like to hear?
Out on the Weekend by Neil Young
Stuck
on a desert island for a year and can only take three albums. What would they
be?
The White Album by The Beatles
Favourite
all time movie:
Dune
If
you drove an ice cream van, what music would you play?
Cypress Hill
Best
show you have ever played in your career:
Playing with W.A. Symphony Orchestra was incredible, to hear
these songs that you had humbly written in bedroom being played by 70-piece
orchestra, it was impossible not have a smile on your face
Any
backstage incident that makes you laugh?
We are always laughing at ongoing ridiculous in jokes backstage
that if anyone walked in would look at us like we were idiots. That’s possibly
why we are still a band
Neil
Young or Paul McCartney?
Oh geez, that near impossible to answer, but I’m gonna say Neil
Young
Who
is the nicest person in Rock n Roll at the moment?
Probably Chris Martin from Cold Play
What
do you hope the next 12 months holds for you?
I have a solo album that comes out Oct 19 along with an NFT drop
Nov 23 and then I’ll hit the cities in early 2023 supporting the album.
