IAN MOSS’ DEBUT ALBUM MATCHBOOK REISSUED TO
CELEBRATE 30TH ANNIVERSARY
To celebrate three decades since Ian Moss launched his post-Cold Chisel career with the debut solo album Matchbook, the multi-platinum and award winning release is today released with a bonus collection of never before released live recordings and rare B-sides.
Matchbook 30th Anniversary expands the original album by including nine songs recorded at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion in November 1989. The set includes Matchbook singles Tucker’s Daughter, Telephone Booth and Mr Rain, as well as an epic 10-minute rendition of Cold Chisel’s Bow River. The video for the Hordern Performance of Tucker’s Daughter can be viewed HERE.
“We decided early on to capture the November 16th show at Sydney’s iconic Hordern Pavilion,”Ian says. “When I look back on it now, I can’t believe that 30 years have rolled by so fast. But it does capture that time in our country’s music history where people needed an outlet from the everyday grind. That night the band and I saw the audience were up for a Thursday night party, so we did our best to deliver.”
A number of B-sides from the Matchbook era will also be included in the collection. A cover of jazz standard Angel Eyes, the Don Walker co-write The Dummy and Ian’s self-penned Islands and Answermachine Blues have been unavailable on digital streaming services until now.
After making his name as a guitarist, songwriter and co-vocalist in Cold Chisel, Ian Moss released his debut solo album Matchbook in 1989. While the album featured direct links to his Chisel past thanks to the appearance of Ian’s former bandmates Steve Prestwich (on drums) and Don Walker (on bass and keyboards, as well as a songwriter for many of the album’s 10 tracks), it was also a massive success on its own terms.
Released in November 1988, lead single Tucker’s Daughter hit number two in the ARIA Singles chart, remained in the top 10 for 11 weeks and reached platinum sales. When its parent album Matchbook followed in August 1989, it debuted at #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart and sold more than 185,000 copies. Moss won five ARIA awards for the album, including Best Australian Album, Best Australian Male Artist and Best Australian Single and Australian Song Of The Year for Tucker’s Daughter.
Two months after Matchbook 30th Anniversary is released on Friday August 23, Ian Moss will embark on an Australia-wide tour celebrating the classic album. Despite 30 years passing since Matchbook’s release, Ian says he can count on one constant.
“What hasn’t changed is the support from the fans who have been on board from the beginning of my solo career and have stayed loyal ever since,” Ian says. “I can’t express what that means enough, but I will say it is extraordinary.”
