Returning to Australian shores with his signature infectious Gypsy-rock mastery, the prolific composer Goran Bregović will debut his critically acclaimed new work Three Letters from Sarajevo, alongside a mixed repertoire spanning three decades of his vast and eclectic catalogue.
Goran Bregović has done it all. A rock star in the former Yugoslavia, he went on to write film scores and ride the fashion of brassy Balkan Gypsy music, selling over six million albums and collaborating with everyone from Iggy Pop to the Gipsy Kings.
Celebrating his 2018 album Three Letters From Sarajevo, inspired by the history and memories of his hometown of Sarajevo, Bosnia – exploring its different faiths, special identity, fusions and complex paradoxes.
In writing Three Letters from Sarajevo, Goran Bregovic united the city’s three religions in harmony around his traditional ‘Weddings and Funerals Orchestra’. Then, for this occasion, he brought in a full symphony orchestra to work on three long instrumental pieces with three solo violins, together with vocalists Rachid Taha, Riff Cohen, Asaf Avidan and Bebe to record his amazing, explosive songs.
Transcending geographic and cultural boundaries, Bregović’s music with the world-famous Wedding & Funeral Band, displays the cathartic power of a live music experience through the seamless blend of Gypsy-Balkan brass, folk percussion, vivacious vocals and a string ensemble. The live shows are renowned triumphant affairs, expressing a love of music that is utterly infectious.
Returning to Australia in 2019 to continue the “Balkan Party” – get your dancing shoes ready and come hear his familiar cry “if you don’t go crazy, you’re not normaaal!”
