I’m a massive Trance fan, so when local promoters HTFU (Harden the F*CK UP) invited me to attend the Gareth Emery 100 Reason to Live tour at HQ, I just couldn’t say no. I’ve seen Gareth play a number of times now, and was especially keen to see what he had in store for us this time round.
Firstly a little bit about Gareth…..Since the release of his Northern Lights Re-Lit album in 2011, (One of my favourite albums I might add) Emery has been all over the music industry; heading up his label Garuda which he launched in 2009, the Release of Drive in 2014 and touring relentlessly around the globe; this is one busy man!
He has collaborated with the likes of Ashley Wallbridge and Ben Gold, and produced tracks with some of the industry’s biggest vocalists, including Lucy Saunders; Roxanne Emery and Christina Novelli. One such collaboration, “Concrete Angel” with Christina Novelli in 2012, landed him Song of the Year on many of that year’s best of lists.
With all that said, back to the show. Like all main room events at HQ, there was an energy in the room that no other club in Adelaide can rival; and Gareth did not disappoint. If there was one thing I loved from his set, it was his progression of the night. He started things off slowly, with some driving progressive house which had us all grooving away, then into some more EDM style house, which really got the crowd going!
The first big track of the night Ed Sheeran – “Bloodstream” (mash up) had the crowd in rapture. He continued to take us on a musical journey through all the classics! I particularly loved it when he played Above & Beyond’s “Piece of Mind” into a remix of Sandstorm and then mixed effortlessly into his remix of the mighty “Concrete Angel” by Christina Novelli; I was in heaven, and by now Gareth had the crowd in the palm of his hand!
And if it couldn’t get much better, he wrecked the floor by playing his very own “Sanctuary” and “On a Good Day” by Above & Beyond. Gareth finished proceedings off by serving up a slew of remixes of his own tracks and a bunch of unreleased mash ups, which had the crowd delighted and begging for more!
What a night! Thanks for having me Sarah, HTFU & HQ. It was a brilliant night of trance, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else you have instore for us, I know I will be there.
