On a freezing wintery Sunday evening in Adelaide, it was appropriate to be heading to Festival Theatre to experience Disney’s new production arriving in Adelaide, Frozen the Musical.
Frozen commences with a focus on the strong sisterhood between Anna and Elsa in their children years. A gorgeous relaxed and funny start to the production which lets the audience settle in before the core of the storyline is introduced when they both become adults. But a special mention to the young talents on this evening who were Samara Wheeler playing a young Elsa, and Matilda Murray playing a young Anna. They were both spectacular in their portrayal of these key characters.
In reviewing the adult characters in the show, the character of Olaf played by Matt Lee is a real delight and seems to be the most favourite character of all for the audience by the sound of the roar for him.
A character which strikes a lot of humour with the audience is Weselton played by Ajin Abella. A huge laugh seems to eventuate whenever he hits the stage.
But from my perspective, the best performing actor for this production was Courtney Monsma who plays Anna. Her vocals are amazing throughout, and she really nails a performance that is truly fit for the world stage.
In reviewing the actual production itself, the stage and lighting design is truly amazing. We as the audience are truly transported from stoney castle bedrooms, icy mountain tops, low-lit gardens and echoey hallowed halls. Incredible special effects adds to this production which had me in awe of how spectacular these effects were.
And when reviewing Disney, a mention needs to be made about the music. All the music is truly special throughout with special mention to Love Is An Open Door’ and ‘For The First Time In Forever’ being favourites of ours. And of course the iconic “Let it Go” which closes the first act before the interval in a huge way.
Speaking of the interval, the scene straight after the interval was probably not necessary, and seemed to be a little too cheesy, and not really blending in with the rest of the storyline.
In summary, Frozen The Musical is a magical production which left us walking out with pure joy and amazement at the truly incredible performances that we just experienced over the last two hours. And yes, it also left us singing “Love is an open door” well and truly into the rest of our Sunday night.
Frozen The Musical is on now at the Festival Theatre in Adelaide until August 7.
