After two years of lockdowns and lack of live shows, Adelaide Hills sisters, Georgia, Ella and Clara return to the Adelaide Fringe. The band, Germein have been turning heads across the globe with their unique brand of indie pop and beautiful harmonies. They have had the pleasure of touring internationally with Little Mix and Phil Collins. Now there are two extremes in music to be supporting. They have a new single in Good for A Girl and have just released a new video in the song 21.
Just how happy can a band be on stage? Is it something in the Adelaide water, is it just nice to be back on a stage with real people watching and appreciating or are they always naturally so happy? I don’t think I have ever seen a band take to a stage with so much warmth and so many smiles.
The Germein sisters play as a trio with Georgia on guitar and keys, Ella on bass and electric cello and Clara on drums, but at times you would swear there were more instruments being played, such is the power of this trio. They certainly can rock, but also bring the music down when required. I even detected a little country rock in the mix.
They asked for and received audience participation in the song Talking with drummer Clara leading the audience with a hand clap to augment the sound. We were then asked to yell the word Huh at appropriate times during Red Rover, while raising a fist in the air.
Germein played a mash up of songs that included a nice piece of the Phil Collins song In the Air Tonight, with Clara moving to the front of the drums, sitting on and playing a box with her hands. The band then moved into playing a new song City Light, which had a nice hard driving sound. Georgia moved to keyboards for a beautiful Because You Breathe with Clara accompanying on electric cello.
The last two years were summed up in the new song 21 and before we knew it, they were playing the final song in Knocking at my Door with the very catchy lyrics, “One, two, one, two, three, four, Please be you knocking at my door, Five, six, five, six, seven, eight, I just wanna see your face” resounding through my head as we exited the tent.
Despite extremely wild applause and calls for more, the band did not return to the stage for an encore (it was Fringe show after all) but were quickly outside, still smiling and happy, talking to fans as they exited the venue.
This was the first time I have seen Germein live. It won’t be the last.
