Fringe Review: Dystopia

By Tony Polese · On March 8, 2020

What: Dystopia
Where: Star Theatres, 145 Sir Donald Bradman Dr, Hilton
Duration: 60 minutes
When: Last day today – 2 shows only!
Genre: Circus and Physical Theatre / Music

(Reviewed by John Glennie)

Eventalaide were invited to this event which is only on for four shows over two days. The troupe are all local Adelaide performers and ‘DYSTOPIA’ tells the tale of a post-apocalyptic, war torn, dystopian future Earth, seized by a dark warlord, inhabited by otherworldly creatures and halflings. ‘DYSTOPIA’ will offer up a dark, fantastical production, featuring a blistering, highly technical yet soulful style of virtuoso guitar playing, complimented by a diverse cast of circus and physical theatre artists.

The show is produced by SA based, Scott and Chantelle Reed, with Scott being the solo musician who does some amazing guitar shredding throughout the entire show. He can certainly play guitar!! However, it didn’t appeal to all – the lady next to me was mainly there to see her grand-daughter perform, but kept blocking her ears in some of the louder, less-musical shreds!

It was a well-choreographed show that featured a great combination of floor gymnastics, juggling, hula-hoops, aerial gymnastics – ring, trapeze swing, etc. We were also treated to some impressive fire juggling. Apart from Scott, who is also the dark warlord, the cast of dancers / gymnasts is entirely female and they do an excellent job.

Great show and well worth getting down to Star Theatre today to see one of the two final performances.
