AFF announces
the first 5 films for 202
Ahead of the launch of its full program on September 12, we’ve released a sneak peek of the 2022 Festival, announcing the first five films that have been selected to screen from the 19th to the 30th of October.
My Policeman
My Policeman, with Harry Styles in his first major film role, will have its Australian premiere in Adelaide, fresh from its award winning spell at the Toronto International Film Festival. Co-starring Emma Corrin, Linus Roache and Rupert Everett, this queer romantic drama, directed by Michael Grandage, is based on the novel of the same name by Bethan Roberts. The cast was the recipient of the Toronto International Film Festival Tribute Award for Performance – the first time the award has gone to an ensemble instead of an individual actor.

As Australia recovers from unprecedented bushfires, Carnifex follows Bailey (Park), an aspiring documentary maker, who joins conservationists Grace (Stringer) and Ben (Greenwood), as they travel deep into the Australian outback to track and record the animals left displaced and devastated by the fires. As night falls, the trio discover a terrifying new creature, but quickly become the ones being tracked.

In The Last Daughter, an AFF Investment Fund film, Brenda Matthews, a proud Wiradjuri woman, who directs with Nathaniel Schmidt, is on a mission to unearth the truth about her past, and to reconcile the two sides of her family. Brenda’s first memories were of growing up in a loving white foster family, before she was suddenly taken away and returned to her Indigenous family. Decades later, she feels a sense of disconnection, and to reconcile her different upbringings, she embarks on a exploration of her identity, uncovering government lies and a deeper connection.

Deeply moving and profound, this heart-breaking debut from Scottish director Charlotte Wells, will be impossible to forget. Frankie Corio, in her debut as the 11 year old daughter of Paul Mescal’s Calum, delivers a performance well beyond her years that has garnered significant critical acclaim.
