Album Review – ELVIS PRESLEY – 50 Greatest Hits (Sony)
Review by Geoff Jenke
Since 2010 there have been over 25 Elvis compilations released and now we have Elvis Presley’s 50 Greatest Hits. Not sure who this is aimed at as Elvis fans would have these songs many times over. Maybe there is a new younger generation of fans discovering Elvis and if this is the case or you are just a casual listener of Elvis, this 2 CD set is a gem.
The set starts with 1954’s That’s All Right, which incidentally didn’t chart at all and ends with Way Down from 1977 which only made it to number 22 in the U.S. charts. But in-between there are hits a plenty. Heartbreak Hotel, Love Me Tender, Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock all from the 1950’s, Surrender, Wooden Heart, In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds from the 60’s and An American Trilogy, Burning Love and Moody Blue from the 70’s. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Elvis may have left the building in 1977, but he has amassed an amazing 136 million album sales in the United States to date. This release will only add to that tally. If you do not have any Elvis music in your collection, you need this set. Awesome!
