Album Review – PIERCE BROTHERS – The Records Were Ours (Warner Music)
Review by Geoff Jenke
The Pierce Brothers started off busking on the streets of Melbourne and are now taking their music to the world. The brothers, Jake and Pat Pierce are multi-instrumentalist and have been shaking dance floors and selling out rooms around the world.
The E.P, The Records Were Ours, is a wonderful slab of high energy folk-rock combined with a blues flavour. It is the first of 3 E.P.’s that will be released by the brothers. The opening track Take Me Out, starts out with a riff of electric guitar, guaranteed to have you jumping off your seat and grooving to the beat.
The Records Were Ours brings things back with a folky rhythm and lovely harmonies. Take a Shot is the highlight of the studio songs on the album with its flowing guitar and vocals. Rhodes has a sound not unfamiliar to The Proclaimers and rock and rolls along nicely. The final studio track, Keep in Mind is just plainly beautiful with a nice piano riff running through the song.
There are two live tracks to round out the E.P. Take a Shot recorded at the Sydney Opera House has the crowd singing along and show cases the brothers live professionalism. On the final track, Brother, recorded in Amsterdam, the brothers admit they are still learning the song. It is an ode to their elder brother Justin. They shouldn’t worry as it comes across magnificently with once again the audience getting involved. In fact, the audience wouldn’t let them finish the song by keeping the chant going at the end until the band joined in again.
The album is a wonderful surprising find for 2017.
