Albums Review – GREEN DAY – God’s Favorite Band; Greatest Hits (REPRISE)
Review by Geoff Jenke
Green Day formed in 1986 and are widely credited with popularising and reviving interest in mainstream punk rock. After two independent album releases, 39/Smooth and Kerplunk the band hit the big time with Dookie in 1994 and had five hit singles off that album.
God’s Favorite Band showcases 22 of the bands finest single releases. With over 40 singles to the bands credit, one wonders why it wasn’t released as a double CD. It must have been a hard choice as to what to include and which songs to leave off.
Interestingly, the album opens with 2000 Light Years from Kerplunk, which was never officially released as a single but was included as a mock up single in a Green Day singles box set entitled Green Day: Ultimate Collectors.
From there you can pretty much guess what is included. All five singles from Dookie – Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, When I Come Around and She follow.
Super hits, Hitchin’ a Ride and Brain Stew from Insomniac are included but no Green Stink Breath, Stuck with Me and Walking Contradiction.
From here on Green Day could do no wrong and were mega stars. Good Riddance and Warning follow, proving the point. Green Day still are releasing quality singles and albums to this day. There are 4 singles from 2004’s American Idiot and the song Still Breathing from 2016’s Revolution Radio album.
There is a new version of Ordinary World which features a duet with Country music superstar Miranda Lambert. One of the many highlights on the album. The set concludes with a new kick ass song, Back in the USA. The perfect way to finish the album.
Throw the CD on at the next party. No further music required to get the show rocking. Just a shame it wasn’t a two CD set with all their singles. Maybe next time.
