Boyce Avenue
The Gov, Sunday 3rd February 2019
(Reviewed by John Glennie)
Boyce Avenue achieved fame via YouTube and have become one of the biggest independent bands on the network. They comprise brothers Alejandro, Fabian and Daniel Manzano and are based in Florida. Their YouTube channel has amassed over 4.3 billion views and over 11.9 million subscribers. These brothers are excellent on YouTube but even better up-close-and-live!
Their set provided the crowd with a good blend of their own songs and popular covers. The latter included greats such as Wonderwall (Oasis), Every Breath You Take (The Police) and a Torn (Natalie Imbruglia)/ Castle On The Hill (Ed Sheeran) medley which was excellent! Alejandro has an outstanding voice and can sing just about anything and his voice is very reminiscent of Ed Sheeran.
They opened the night with one Hear Me Now before wow-ing the audience with Wonderwall and Imperfect Me. After the above covers we were treated to some originals with Cinderella, Teenage Dream, Broken Angel and Family – all great tracks. The latter was written about a friend who had a disjointed upbringing and she did not have a good relationship with her family, unlike the Manzano family!
I really loved their rendition of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car (my favourite for the night) then a couple more originals with Be Somebody and Ride The Wave. His brothers had a short break while Alejandro did a short solo medley of Perfect (Ed Sheeran) and Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers). The brothers came back for Anchor (off their Road Less Traveled album) before all three left the stage.
The encore gave us an original with On My Way before finishing the evening in perfect style with Goo Goo Dolls Iris with the crowd providing most of the chorus. A great night’s entertainment from an outstanding trio. I look forward to their return!
