MUSHROOM LABEL
WINNERS
FOR 2020 ARIA AWARDS
Mushroom labels are beyond proud to announce the winners for this year’s ARIA Awards. In what has been a successful year for the labels, Mushroom could not think of anyone more deserving of the Award for Best Male & Best Adult Contemporary than the legendary Archie Roach.
Last night Archie Roach was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame, after a stellar 30 year career. The ARIA Hall Of Fame accolade joins Archie’s extensive career achievements which include a Human Rights Achievement Award, inclusion as a Member Of The Order Of Australia (AM), Victorian Australian Of The Year, and now 7 ARIA Awards.
In addition to the undeniably deserving Hall Of Fame induction, Archie capped off the night winning two awards, Best Adult Contemporary and Best Male for his album Tell Me Why. When Tell Me Why was released in 2019, it debuted at #7 on the ARIA Chart – Archie’s highest-ever ARIA chart position.
If you were witness to the extraordinary performance last night of the emotional and history changing song ‘Took The Children Away’, it showed the courage and resilience that Archie Roach has showed all these years. Archie came from a spell in hospital to perform for all of us, a truly special and unique moment in Australian music television. Mushroom is honoured to have released and published Archie’s music for the past 30 years.
In Archies own words to ABC News Breakfast this morning when asked about 2021,
“The spirits always strong.The flesh may be a little tired, but the spirit is always strong. So I’m looking forward to the next year, that’s for sure.”
The 2020 ARIA Awards come following a huge year for Archie Roach. After being named 2020 Victorian Australia Of The Year, in October Archie released the picture-book edition of Tell Me Why, with illustrations from his late partner Ruby Hunter. He followed that up with the launch of The Archie Roach Stolen Generation Educational Resources in conjunction with the ABC, and this month saw him release The Songs Of Charcoal Lane, a 30 year anniversary celebration of his debut album. And to top it all off, last week Archie was named the Double J Artist Of The Year at the J Awards.
Chairman of Mushroom Group Michael Gudinski couldn’t be more thrilled and said;
“What an honour it is to be the home of Archie Roach’s label and publishing, he truly is an inspiration to so many and his grit and determination to perform for Australia last night was incredible. It was a special moment to watch back the performance and also to see Archie win Best Male over his much younger contemporaries. The soulful Teskey Brothers won again. They have such a special sound and will just keep getting bigger and bigger. Great music rules!”

We’d also like to congratulate The Teskey Brothers for winning the ARIA Award for Best Blues & Roots Album for their #1 ARIA chart-topping LP, Live At The Forum! Amidst a 16 date sold out national Australian tour in 2019, the band undertook the arduous task of recording to analogue tape during their four-night stand at the beloved Melbourne venue. The album features songs from the band’s two revered albums, Run Home Slow (2019) and Half Mile Harvest (2017), as well as a special cover of John Lennon’s ‘Jealous Guy’. Live At The Forum is the first live album to go number 1 by an Australian band since 1992’s AC/DC Live.
This is the band’s 4th ARIA award to date, following a huge 2019 where they took home the awards for Best Group, Best Blues & Roots Album and Engineer Of The Year (Sam Teskey) for Run Home Slow.
A big congratulations to our 2020 ARIA Award winners, as we all look forward to 2021 and some forthcoming great releases from Mushroom Labels.
