Album Review – Kyle Lionhart – Eleven & Two (Ivy League Records)
Review by Geoff Jenke
Hailing from Byron Bay, Kyle Lionhart is riding high after playing sold out shows around the country. Eleven & Two is Kyle’s second release, a seven track mini album following on from his debut Keep In Mind EP.
Kyle’s music is emotive and at times personal. Opening track Sweet Girl is told from the point of view of a father. Says Kyle of the lyrics: “The song was inspired by a conversation I had with my father; he communicated how he may have approached the way he handled some of the more fragile and pivotal points of his daughters adolescence. If only he’d known what affect these moments would have later in her life & the worry that forever now he will be chasing that ‘Sweet Girl’, and the memory that fades with her.”
Tracks What I Already Know and Insincere have an indie-soul sound to them, not unlike a young Jeff Buckley. (Hallelujah has been part of his live set.) In fact his voice has a folk/soul sound to it. Kyle’s guitar picking is sublime and beautiful at the same time, combining well with his voice.
Class Clown sees Kylie share vocals with good friend and vocalist Burnell, the two voices blending beautifully together as one.
With the release of this mini album, Kyle Lionhart had better start booking bigger venues for his next tour around Australia. The mini album is haunting and beautiful and even after many listens; one still finds something new to enjoy with every hearing.
