Review by Geoff Jenke
Day Wave is an American “band” which formed in 2015. The “band” consists solely of Jackson Phillips who uses accompanying musicians for live shows. This is Day Wave’s first album although they have released a double EP in 2015.
While Jackson Phillips has released this album under a band name it is truly a solo project. It has an 80’s sound to it with underlying synths featuring throughout the album. The standout feature though is Phillips vocals. At time’s they sound dreamy, at times powerful and at other times sounding like they were recorded in the next room.
There is a nice “driving” tempo and beat to the album but this does become a bit too familiar as the album goes along. Guitar is used too infrequently, but when they do chime in it is extremely effective and lifts the track beyond the drum machine/synth beats.
It’s hard to pick the best tracks as they all blend together nicely. At the same time there are no “bad” tracks on the album either. It just continually fills your head with cascading infectious sounds.
Overall an enjoyable dreamscape experience, one most likely best experienced in the early hours of the morning with that final drink of the night.
