TEA: ONE’S CUP OF TEA

By Tony Polese · On March 24, 2021

Tea has an umpteen number of health benefits. It was initially a medicinal compound and gradually turned out to be a beverage. Green and black tea contain the advantageous antioxidant capacity to protect people from numerous degenerative diseases like stroke, cancer, diabetes, heart ailments, etc. It does this job because of the presence of flavonoids which aids to fight against free radicals that are contributed by the conditions.

For the researchers, it was interesting to know that drinking tea begets mental alertness and that tea has antimicrobial properties. Most importantly, tea can be considered an excellent alternative to coffee as it contains lesser caffeine. Therefore, gulping tea goes well with a healthy lifestyle. The beverage comes as bulk, brand, and premium teas. Bulk tea is mechanically harvested, with the leaves and twigs blended, whereas brand tea is one combined with herbs, flowers, fruits, or different flavours. Premium tea is a portion of high-quality tea that is meticulously cultivated and hand-picked. There are many premium teas accessible in the market with various flavour options, each known for its unique properties.

Innards of tea

It contains various substances that are linked to good health. Polyphenols, namely flavonoids, catechins, and epicatechins, are the chief constituents. The level of polyphenols is heightened during the fermentation step. Polyphenols are antioxidants that soak up and neutralise the oxidants created by the cells as increased levels of oxidants result in harmful effects in the body.

Various tea types

Green tea is made with steamed tea leaves. It contains antioxidants that help fight against different types of cancers, clogging of arteries, burning fat, diminishing the risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s syndrome, stroke, and improving cholesterol levels.

Black tea is made with fermented tea leaves and has caffeine content. Studies suggest that black tea is considered lung-protective and that it also reduces the chances of stroke.

White tea is made without undergoing the process of fermentation. Study shows that white tea has potent anticancer properties when compared with the processed teas.

Pu-erh tea is obtained using fermented and aged leaves. Some studies showed that consumption of Pu-erh tea resulted in weight loss and reduced LDL cholesterol levels.

Health benefits of tea

Tea drinkers are less likely to develop diabetes, which clarifies that polyphenols help regulate blood glucose levels. The science behind it is that, as sugar level rises in the blood, insulin secretion from the pancreas starts increasing, indicating the cells to begin metabolising the glucose. The polyphenols in the tea make the cells more sensitive to insulin’s functions. Researchers have found that tea lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart disease, and stroke. It was also found to reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol.

The amount of L-Theanine in the premium tea is favourable for brain health and improves brain function. It plays a significant role in relieving stress and has antioxidants that help keep a healthy immune system. It has low caffeine making it a more nourishing beverage, aids in digestion, increases bone density, has antimicrobial properties, and much more.

The sum and substance

Drinking tea keeps one as fit as a fiddle unless it is consumed superabundantly with added sugar content. A daily cup of tea can be genuinely rejuvenating and can improve the entire mood of the day.
