New Owners Breathe Life into South Australia’s Largest Agapanthus Farm |
If you have yet to explore Littlewood Agapanthus Farm in the Adelaide Hills, it’s a must for your to-do list!
With the largest variety of Agapanthus flowers in South Australia, Littlewood showcases 100,000 plants across 60 picturesque acres. You’ll be transported into a botanical wonderland with a stunning lake, delightful birdhouses, garden seats, wine barrels and lush green walking paths as far as the eye can see.
Agapanthus, from the Greek word for love (agape) and flower (anthos), otherwise known as the African Lily, are an ideal plant for the South Australian climate and conditions. Being able to survive under extreme conditions, they produce a spectacular display of purple and white flowers during the Spring and Summer months in Australia. Littlewood boasts 12 varieties including the Standard Praecox Orientalis (the most common type); Guilfoyle; Perpetual Peace; Semi Dwarf Albo Roseus Compacta; Dutch Blue Giant and more.
The real beauty of these plants is that they are virtually impossible to kill (great for the not so green thumbs) and even when not flowering, their leaves remain a vibrant green all year round.
Established in 1997, John and Tracey Koumi took over Littlewood Agapanthus farm in April 2017, with Tracey’s son Sam and his wife Jenna joining them on the venture. Together, they have brought new life and modern ideas to this one of a kind function and event space.
John says he and Tracey “…fell in love with the gardens the moment they visited. The potential to offer something really unique and share the beauty of Littlewood with others is what appealed to us”.
“The Agapanthus are quite often taken for granted, many don’t realise they are not native to Australia. There is nothing quite like what we have on offer here at Littlewood, the mere quantity and variety of the plants are truly amazing”.
Traditionally run as a nursery and hired out for more of a DIY function / wedding space by the previous owners, the Koumi family are now showcasing the full potential of Littlewood.
As well as continuing to operate the nursery, where you can visit and purchase the hardy flowers, they now offer fully catered corporate and private events, weddings and functions. Whether it’s a casual picnic with rugs, pillows and platters of locally sourced gourmet delights, or a seated formal event, Littlewood really ticks all the boxes.
The pavilion located on the top of a lush green hill, overlooks stunning views of the property and is a beautiful undercover space that can house up to 100 standing. For bigger functions or those planned in the cooler months, marquees and outdoor heaters are also available, so you can enjoy the best of every season in the Adelaide Hills.
From the catering to the décor and entertainment, every thought is carefully and beautifully considered from the in-house events team. Sam and Jenna Cook have a combined wealth of knowledge and experience in food and functions and know first-hand how the farm can be the perfect backdrop for an absolutely magical day, having recently had their own wedding on the premises.
“The live music, fairy lights and fresh floral arrangements on the handmade arbour, made this my dream wedding space!”, says Jenna.
