Mr Potato, Glenelg
(Reviewed by John Glennie)
Mr Potato is a new “fast food” venue located about 20 metres off Jetty Road at 1 Durham Street in Glenelg. For those who like something incredibly tasty and healthy, then don’t miss out on this place.
You may be thinking “another baked potato place” but that is where you would be mistaken. Unlike the baked potato stalls at sporting and public events, where you get a jumbo spud filled with the fixed-menu fillings, Mr Potato has a number of options and you can build your own.
Instead of one big potato, if you order the large, you get 3 small potatoes – choice of ‘lite’ (low GI) or sweet potatoes – with or without (vegan!) butter. There are some ‘set recipes’ but we opted to build our own and selected the crispy pork belly, which was extremely tasty and very lean. Then you can select up to 4 salad fillings with deliciously healthy options such as kale-slaw, quinoa tabouli, fresh grated carrot, raw beetroot, Moroccan chickpea to name a few. There are many vegan options including their cheese, mayo, butter and even the sour cream (I couldn’t taste any difference!). Even some of the ‘traditional’ sauces are healthy and organic from Celebrate Health.
Owners / hosts Tyson and Jess source local produce daily so it is super fresh and you can really taste it. The delicious potatoes are from country SA in Lameroo. Apart from a vegan base, the other meat options are beef ragu, 12-hour slow cooked chicken and bacon. They all looked sensational, so I must go back several more times to try them all you are definitely provide excellent value for money.
Tyson and Jess said they will also bring in a winter menu with fillings that may include Bolognese and baked beans. However, I will definitely go back soon after they take delivery of their ice-cream machine with which they will be producing several delicious flavours of their potato ice-cream – yes, you read that correctly: potato ice-cream. Tyson said it is not quite as creamy as its dairy-based cousin but is really tasty and you would never guess it is made from potato. Cannot wait!!!
