Arkaba Hotel’s Battle of the SA Regions review

By Tony Polese · On August 14, 2018

Being one of the most highly regarded and sought after wine producing states in the world, South Australia’s wines are in an overabundance! But with us picky consumers having so much to choose from, there comes competition.
And on Sunday 12th August, over 200 wines showcased at Arkaba Hotel, coming from four different regions; Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills and Limestone Coast all competing to be crowned the best region, by a people’s choice vote taken from everyone in attendance.
Each winery had their own setup across the room and guests were spoilt with a wine glass on the night for tastings of every wine they desired and a delicious shared nibbles table with local cheeses and condiments which were constantly refreshed. As well as laidback music played throughout the afternoon by Nick Deegan.
This year, the winner was chosen as McLaren Vale, in the southern region of SA.
But that’s not to say the others weren’t good!
My personal favourite of the night was not so much a regular wine but the Seppeltsfield Para 1997 Tawny, I could drink an entire bottle! It was so incredibly delicious, rich and decadent, but not too sweet to become sickly, which is usually common with most tawnys, ports and muscats. I could sit back in a rocking chair with dim lights and a warm fireplace crackling at my feet and sip away all night…
I highly recommend this event to any wine connoisseurs and grape aficionados and would definitely enjoy attending again in the future.
