Twelfth Night – 2016 Oz Asia Festival

By Tony Polese · On September 24, 2016

Words by Darlin Song

Walking into the Ukiyo Tent at Elder Park was like walking into a Hindi town. The tent was decorated with a stage filled with Hindi musical instruments. Audiences were seated in a big circle along the edge of the tent with an open, where the stage was situated.

I looked around. Colours, it was very colourful. The place gave an intimate feeling. There was no microphone. There was no speaker. And I wondered ‘how are they going to perform?’.As I made my way to my seat, background Hindi music started playing. I got excited and couldn’t wait to see the performance.

Off went the light. Up came the darkness. And bang! A group of performers appeared with a captivated song in Hindi accompanied by amazing traditional Hindi choreography dance. Artistic Director and The Company Theatre Founder Atul Kumar put a Hindi twist in one of the Shakespeare’s classics, Twelfth Night, to let his audiences experience the Hindi culture like never before.

Without spoiling anything, Twelfth Night is sure to satisfy your craving of Hindi culture from costumes to singing to dancing many unexpected plot twists. Relax and allow yourself to go along the journey of love.

If you speak or understand Hindi, then you’ll no doubt be mesmerised by the performance to no end. But don’t worry if you don’t understand Hindi for I still felt the love, the fun, and the deep emotion conveyed by the performers.
