The Innocents is a film for both rom-com and crime thriller lovers.
It follows the story of Sylvie, who teaches acting classes for those in prison and falls in love with convicted burglar Michel. When Michel is released from prison, he and Sylvie navigate their new affectionate relationship and lease on life.
With past experiences of his own, Sylvie’s son Abel struggles with his mother’s new relationship, the particular baggage it comes with, and his mother’s history with the incarcerated. How does he protect his mother from potential risks associated with dating an ex-con without getting in the way of her happiness? Abel confides in his friend, who has a more open and daring view on life.
With French-cinema styling, including a complementary original soundtrack, the film shows nuisances such as close ups of Sylvie’s face and the intimacy of her and Michel’s affection. The characters are a perfect fit and the show of emotion beyond the dialogue is compelling.
The Innocent is funny, cute, and sweet but also suspenseful as you find out what the characters are up to, and how they respond to these adventures. Engaging, lovely, dramatic yet light hearted, this film is easy and enjoyable to watch.
