Mother is a South Korean film about a single mother played by Kim Hye-ja with an intellectually disable son Yoon Do-joon played by Won Bin who has been falsely accused of murdering a young school girl. Mother is then on a crusade to protect and prove her son of his innocence with twists and turns that leave you questioning who really could be the killer.
While the film never mentions the mothers name, you certainly know who she is; a fierce and loyal supporter of her son who would move mountains to protect her only son. On a mission to find the real killer the film explores the simple yet complex relationship between Mother and son. From young, Do-Joon has been taught to “fight back” if anyone questions his disabilities and resents being called a retard. He has been shielded and overprotected by his mother his whole life which unfortunately limits his ability to protect himself.
While being arrested he willingly and unquestionably signs a confession to murdering the young girl without realising the consequences. Dealing with police incompetence and a nonchalant lawyer mother is set off on a mission to find the truth to set her son free.
The acting by Kim Hye-ja and Won Bin takes the film into a higher elevation. The storyline is intriguing and at times some humour is thrown in to give you a confusion about whether the movie is a dark comedy or a dark thriller. It’s a brilliant movie and you are constantly surprised with each scene on the journey of Do-joon innocence.
