Peter Riordan (Timothy Spall) is a quiet, unassuming man who has worked all his working life for a Manchester bank. He is shocked when he receives his early retirement payout then decides to get in touch with his brother. They haven’t seen each other in many years so Peter visits him in Benidorm – a lovely coastal resort area on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.
He is kept waiting at the airport for over an hour and eventually catches a taxi to his brother’s address, where he learns that nobody has seen him for several days. He is given access to his brother’s apartment on the 42nd floor which has delightful views of the coast. He falls asleep but is woken by a lovely lady, who let herself into the apartment, looking for the elusive brother. She works in his brother’s nightclub, which Peter didn’t know about, and the workers haven’t been paid.
Peter decides to pay the club a visit and is confronted with his intruder, Alex (Sarita Choudhury), doing a sensual burlesque dance on the stage. He is mesmerized with her and gradually get to know her as they both try to find out where his brother has gone. The police aren’t much help either and are reluctant to assist in the search. Peter finds some documents in a deeds box in the apartment which gives some clue as to his brother’s dealings.
He starts following the clues left in the documents and passes them onto the police, who finally start to investigate. We do eventually discover why his brother left suddenly and we do know where he went – but that’s about it! Peter decides to head home, hoping to entice Alex to come with him. How does it go? You’ll have to see it to find out! Hopefully you will determine the purpose or message behind this movie – because I couldn’t. I was left thinking “So that’s it??”.
