MOVIE REVIEW – Girls Trip

Review by Geoff Jenke

When four lifelong friends known as the Flossy Posse, Ryan (Regina Hall), Sasha (Queen Latifah), Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Dina (Tiffany Haddish) travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, there’s dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing for three nights.

The four had drifted apart but when Ryan, an extremely successful woman, is offered a speaking engagement in New Orleans, she decided to take her old friends along. They discover Ryan’s husband has been cheating on her and want to help her set things right.

Girls Trip will probably be compared to The Hangover but in reality, it rises above that film. It is a comedy that will have you talking about the shock value parts, like public urination, but deep down it is about lifelong friendships. At times, it is laugh out loud comedy and at other times cringe worthy comedy. I promise you will never look at a grapefruit the same ever again. It certainly pushes the boundaries at times.

All four girls are excellent as the Flossy Posse but Tiffany Haddish rises above the others three with her extra outrageous energy. There are many “walk on” roles by famous entertainers playing themselves, like Mariah Carey, Babyface, Faith Evens and Sean Combs, just to name a few. It seems all the RnB artists wanted to be in the movie.

It is hard to maintain quality comedy for two hours and this is where the movie falters slightly. It is probably 20 minutes too long. However, in a cinema nearly full of women (I counted about 10 males) there was a lot of laughing to be heard. In short, a very funny, extremely rude, chick flick probably sums it up.

I will never look at grapefruit the same way again.
