Lightning McQueen embarks on a new adventure in Cars 3 for an enjoyable but ultimately predictable family film. The story follows McQueen after a devastating crash leaves him injured and defeated. The iconic red car travels back to his roots to train for the ultimate come-back to racing against new technologically advanced competitors. The narrative is easy to follow and entertaining, however it didn’t offer anything new or exciting.
In terms of visuals, the film is colourful and vibrant. Each character has a distinct presentation and style which makes the story entertaining to watch. Additionally, the 3D effects offer an extra layer to the action of the film. I enjoyed the distinct settings that the film journeyed throughout. One scene depicts a sparse beach side whilst another a dark forest. This variety added depth to the visual elements of the film.
Despite the great presentation of the film, the story lacked thought and originality. Sure, it was easy to follow and targeted towards children, but it felt like I had seen the same narrative before. I think that if the lively visuals had been paired with an innovative storyline the film would have been great, but it just wasn’t. The story was mediocre and this affected my overall enjoyment of my experience.
Even though the story isn’t very unique, the film remains enjoyable and is great for a family day out.
